CA's O'Malley: 3Tera Buy Is Foundational

CA bets on Cloud, acquires another company

CA Session at Cloud Expo

Computer Associates announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to buy Virtual Data Center provider 3Tera.  Chris O'Malley, EVP, Cloud Products for Computer Associates announced the acquisition at an investors conference in San Francisco today.

“CIOs can use cloud computing to build and manage a new type of IT ‘supply chain’ across today’s virtualized internal and external technology infrastructure,” said O’Malley.. “3Tera technology is a powerful addition to the total solution CA provides for optimizing these high-value supply chains—from the mainframe to the cloud.”

"This acquisition is foundational to our growth strategy," commented O'Malley. He continued "You are seeing CA change before your eyes."

At the conference, 3Tera presented a 4 minute demo which showed how their technology could easily configure at world-wide data center, with computing resources in Dallas and the Netherlands. The demo purported to be able to copy the applications and all related data between 2 geographical dispersed data centers quickly and easily.

No discussion was made at the conference on how log management would be done in such an environment, providing visibility and control for compliance and security.

What was unclear from the announcement is how this fits in with its other recent acquisition, which include: Cassatt, NetQoS and Oblicore. 3Tera is small cloud provider, with only about 80 customers, as mentioned in a press release in CAs site.  This contrasts with over 60,000 customers that vendor Rackspace touted at the same conference.
