CA Buys 3Tera

3Tera Session at Cloud Expo

Determined to be a cloud player, CA said Wednesday morning that it's buying privately held 3Tera whose browser-based AppLogic software is used to rapidly deploy and scale enterprise-class applications on public and private clouds and to build cloud services.

Terms were not disclosed.

The 3Tera buy follows CA's recent acquisitions of Cassatt, NetQoS and Oblicore, which CA sees as expanding its portfolio of widgetry to manage cloud computing as part of an integrated IT management program.

Note that Cassatt founder Bill Coleman, also a founder of BEA, joined 3Tera's advisory board last year after Cassatt came to grief. One can now imagine his advice.

CA says it plans to integrate 3Tera's widgetry with its existing virtual and physical infrastructure management functionality such as its Spectrum Automation Manager and CA Service Assurance line of products and with the assets of Cassatt and Oblicore in the name of comprehensive set of cloud tools.

It also plans to expand 3Tera's support from Xen to VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V.

AppLogic is supposed to simplify the design and deployment of composite applications as a single logical entity in the cloud. By unifying application configuration, application deployment and a virtual server fabric it can reduce costs, improve productivity and increase service quality by eliminating some of the manual tasks prone to error.

Service providers can use 3Tera to offer application stacks on-demand by adding applications to the AppLogic catalog, where they can be deployed to a low-cost shared cloud infrastructure.

3Tera also provides a cloud computing marketplace where ISVs can offer developers production-ready cloud components and full applications that are available on a pay-as-you-go basis.

3Tera's customers currently include around 80 enterprises and service providers globally including BT and KDDI.
