CA Technologies to Deliver Catalog of Cloud Computing Services

CA Technologies on Wednesday announced that ScaleMatrix, a new managed service provider (MSP) run by data center industry veterans, has chosen CA 3Tera AppLogic software as the primary platform for delivering its catalog of cloud computing services. To launch and build the business, ScaleMatrix needed a single platform to provide multiple cloud offerings, including application hosting, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Virtual Private Data Centers (VPDCs). The company selected the CA 3Tera AppLogic cloud platform in a three-year contract valued at $3.06 million. ScaleMatrix will also use CA 3Tera AppLogic to provide scalability and high availability for business services running in the company's cloud environments.

Having had 3Tera in its possession since February, CA Technologies has revved its AppLogic turnkey cloud infrastructure widgetry and come out with a 2.9 platform to broad its appeal. It's supposed to let cloud-minded managed service providers or large enterprise themselves look like Amazon, Rackspace or Azure by creating composite business services with all the tools needed for an application to run, including optimized infrastructure, configurations, software, code and data. Customers are now supposed to be able to build cloud infrastructure in as little as four hours, and use a "drag and drop" model-driven catalog of reusable applications - out of the "build once, reuse many times" school - to rapidly compose, deploy and manage complex online applications, significantly reducing time-to-market for new business services.

OK; I’m not skipping or anything, but I am happy. CA Inc., obviously on the path to acquire more and more cloud technology providers in order to build up its own capabilities for cloud computing, is joining the ever-louder chorus of those in our industry recognizing that enterprises want, no, they demand, better monitoring of cloud providers. CA this week announced it has agreed to buy a company called Nimsoft, Inc., a Redwood City, CA-based provider of IT performance and availability monitoring solutions for small and mid-sized companies and managed service providers (MSPs). It’s supposedly all for cash, a transaction valued at $350 million.

CA, the IT management software maker, is becoming an aggressive player in the cloud computing arena. Observers are noting that the company’s third cloud-related acquisition, of a firm called 3Tera, which developed cloud computing technology AppLogic, will help CA make it easier for customers to move to cloud environments. I’ve been doing a lot of work on private (internal) clouds lately – it’s a result of my new job with Unisys. Part of that work has been spending time with customers on their plans for cloud computing — internal and external. There’s some very interesting work going on in the private cloud space, and the solutions available to enterprises to build their clouds are many.
