Cloud Questions: it’s all about applications if you ask me

We’re less than two months out of the next CloudCamp. As usual that means, we’re getting some question to give our thoughts on. I have to say the questions were really good this time. So I thought I’d share them here as well. Q: Agree or disagree? – “While the IT savings aspect is compelling, [...]

This Week in Cloud

Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) is a hosted queue for storing messages that are transmitted between computers. Developers can transmit data between distributed components of an application without requiring the availability of all the components of that application. The Stony Brook Network Security and Applied Cryptography Lab evaluated Amazon SQS by measuring the number of simultaneously supported users, the size of the message, and the throughput rate. This 10-page report details the testing setup, costs associated with the service, and results of the experiments.
CA Technologies to Deliver Catalog of Cloud Computing Services

CA Technologies on Wednesday announced that ScaleMatrix, a new managed service provider (MSP) run by data center industry veterans, has chosen CA 3Tera AppLogic software as the primary platform for delivering its catalog of cloud computing services.
To launch and build the business, ScaleMatrix needed a single platform to provide multiple cloud offerings, including application hosting, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Virtual Private Data Centers (VPDCs). The company selected the CA 3Tera AppLogic cloud platform in a three-year contract valued at $3.06 million. ScaleMatrix will also use CA 3Tera AppLogic to provide scalability and high availability for business services running in the company's cloud environments.

CA Revs 3Tera AppLogic

Having had 3Tera in its possession since February, CA Technologies has revved its AppLogic turnkey cloud infrastructure widgetry and come out with a 2.9 platform to broad its appeal.

It's supposed to let cloud-minded managed service providers or large enterprise themselves look like Amazon, Rackspace or Azure by creating composite business services with all the tools needed for an application to run, including optimized infrastructure, configurations, software, code and data.

Customers are now supposed to be able to build cloud infrastructure in as little as four hours, and use a "drag and drop" model-driven catalog of reusable applications - out of the "build once, reuse many times" school - to rapidly compose, deploy and manage complex online applications, significantly reducing time-to-market for new business services.

CA’s Latest Cloud Acquisition Focuses on Monitoring

OK; I’m not skipping or anything, but I am happy. CA Inc., obviously on the path to acquire more and more cloud technology providers in order to build up its own capabilities for cloud computing, is joining the ever-louder chorus of those in our industry recognizing that enterprises want, no, they demand, better monitoring of cloud providers.

CA this week announced it has agreed to buy a company called Nimsoft, Inc., a Redwood City, CA-based provider of IT performance and availability monitoring solutions for small and mid-sized companies and managed service providers (MSPs). It’s supposedly all for cash, a transaction valued at $350 million.

A Message from Barry X Lynn, CEO 3Tera

We started 3Tera to radically ease the way IT deploys, maintains and scales – MANAGES - applications. Our AppLogic® cloud computing platform provides the foundation of our partners’ orchestration of cloud services for public and private clouds around the world. Today, we’re taking the next step in moving toward making cloud computing mainstream by joining CA.
CA and 3Tera share a common vision for the future of cloud computing, and we are excited about the opportunities that this acquisition will create for our customers, partners and their cloud users.
This is a historic moment in Cloud Computing. The significance of this acquisition is a heck of a lot more than just a land grab in a hot space. We are confident that as a team, CA and 3Tera, will extend our leadership of the cloud computing platform market.

CA on the Cloud Hunt Again

CA, the IT management software maker, is becoming an aggressive player in the cloud computing arena.
Observers are noting that the company’s third cloud-related acquisition, of a firm called 3Tera, which developed cloud computing technology AppLogic, will help CA make it easier for customers to move to cloud environments. (CA announced its intended purchase last week.)
And interestingly enough, a story I read said that the purchase will “put the company in a good position to later sell its management products designed to monitor and control services in the cloud.”

“The most interesting thing about 3Tera is their ability to give both service providers and enterprises a way to take existing applications and bring them to private and public cloud environments via an elegant interface,” said Jay Fry, vice president of business unit strategy for CA, in the piece. “The process used to be done very manually, but AppLogic automates it and smoothes that transition.”

Whether it be Internet-facing applications, or Enterprise-facing applications and data, one of the most important issues faced by small companies is the potential loss of information and applications needed to run their operations.

Disaster recovery and business continuity. Recovery point objectives and recovery time objectives. Backing up data to offsite locations, and potentially running mirrored processing sites – it is an expensive business requirement to fulfill. Particularly for budget conscious small and medium-sized companies.

3Tera and AppLogic SWAG Moves to the Cloud Computing Retro Collection

CA and 3Tera have announced CA’s acquisition of the innovative cloud computing Infrastructure as a Service vendor. This is a great thing for Computer Associates, and perhaps a bit sad for the cloud community in general. Why? It is hard to fit the energy and enthusiasm felt when walking into 3Tera’s Aliso Veijo office into words.

CA's O'Malley: 3Tera Buy Is Foundational

Computer Associates announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to buy Virtual Data Center provider 3Tera. Chris O'Malley, EVP, Cloud Products for Computer Associates announced the acquisition at an investors conference in San Francisco today.
“CIOs can use cloud computing to build and manage a new type of IT ‘supply chain’ across today’s virtualized internal and external technology infrastructure,” said O’Malley.. “3Tera technology is a powerful addition to the total solution CA provides for optimizing these high-value supply chains—from the mainframe to the cloud.”
"This acquisition is foundational to our growth strategy," commented O'Malley. He continued "You are seeing CA change before your eyes."
At the conference, 3Tera presented a 4 minute demo which showed how their technology could easily configure at world-wide data center, with computing resources in Dallas and the Netherlands. The demo purported to be able to copy the applications and all related data between 2 geographical dispersed data centers quickly and easily.

It is hard to fit the energy and enthusiasm felt when walking into 3Tera’s Aliso Veijo office into words.
Not that Computer Associates is a bad company. In fact, they have always been one of the best kept secrets in business and enterprise software. Rock solid systems, professional sales and engineering – just not as well known to the broader community as other large enterprise systems vendors.
AppLogic brought the cloud community many firsts. The first to integrate IPv6 into their provisioning system. The first to really simplify the drag and drop provisioning process. Perhaps the first to really test and prove the concept of globally distributed processing and disaster recovery models. And they are really great guys.

CA to Acquire Cloud Computing Solution Provider 3Tera

CA, Inc. on Wednesday announced a definitive agreement to acquire privately held 3Tera, Inc., a pioneer in cloud computing. 3Tera’s AppLogic offers an innovative solution for building cloud services and deploying complex enterprise-class applications to public and private clouds using an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI). Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

With 3Tera – which follows CA’s recent acquisitions of Cassatt, NetQoS and Oblicore – CA continues to aggressively expand its portfolio of solutions to manage cloud computing as part of an integrated information technology management program.
3Tera enables enterprises and service providers to provision, deploy and scale public and private cloud computing environments while maintaining full control, flexibility and reliability. 3Tera also makes it easy for service providers to offer application stacks on demand by adding applications to the AppLogic catalog, where they can be deployed to a low-cost, shared cloud infrastructure. 3Tera’s customers include more than 80 enterprises and service providers globally, which use the cloud computing technology to provide services to thousands of users.

3Tera Chairman To Present at Cloud Expo April 19-21 in New York City

IT is reliable today largely because of years of investment in management, monitoring and modeling. So, as the paradigm shift to Cloud Computing occurs, will we still be able to leverage these investments? This is the question that will be asked - and asnwered - by 3Tera Chairman and CEO Barry X Lynn in his upcoming session at the largest cloud computing event in the world, the 5th Cloud Expo in New York (19-21 April, 2010). Lynn's session will focus on how the management of IT in the Cloud needs to evolve in order for Cloud to become pervasive and even more reliable that IT is today.

CA Buys 3Tera

Determined to be a cloud player, CA said Wednesday morning that it's buying privately held 3Tera whose browser-based AppLogic software is used to rapidly deploy and scale enterprise-class applications on public and private clouds and to build cloud services.

Terms were not disclosed.

The 3Tera buy follows CA's recent acquisitions of Cassatt, NetQoS and Oblicore, which CA sees as expanding its portfolio of widgetry to manage cloud computing as part of an integrated IT management program.

Note that Cassatt founder Bill Coleman, also a founder of BEA, joined 3Tera's advisory board last year after Cassatt came to grief. One can now imagine his advice.

The message from the software and hardware vendors is clear – there is an enormous investment in cloud computing technologies and services.

Predicting the Great Cloud Shakeout – Don’t Become CloudKill

Setting aside the shameless cloud-washing that’s going on from some vendors, there are a lot of cloud service providers (CSPs – providers of cloud) today. Many of those listed in Sys-Con’s Top 150 report are CSPs, while others are providing extensions, tools or services for clouds. Everybody’s a cloud provider these days – and as [...]

The institutional horror stories continue, the old Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) address space is nearly gone, and if we do not transition to IPv6 with its nearly unlimited address space the Internet will grind to a halt.

Insulating Innovators from Infrastructure with Cloud Computing

The SMS message was desperate. AJ sent the plea “If I have to see one more picture of a cloud in a PPT I might lose it…” After two days of presentations at the Cloud Computing Conference and Expo, where companies tried to bring the audience up to an Intro to Clouds 101 level, some attendees were grasping for new ideas, new information, new reasons why companies should release their IT models currently based on strict FUD-Factor (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) compliance, to the new generation of cloud computing.

A Brief History of Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing is the most important trend in the IT Industry. Even the biggest critics seem to agree that – in spite of some over-zealous marketeers – Cloud Computing is one of the most important paradigm shifts of the past decades. But what is it all about? Where did it come from? And what's to be expected?

Private (Internal) Clouds

I’ve been doing a lot of work on private (internal) clouds lately – it’s a result of my new job with Unisys. Part of that work has been spending time with customers on their plans for cloud computing — internal and external. There’s some very interesting work going on in the private cloud space, and the solutions available to enterprises to build their clouds are many.

3tera Drops IPv6 Into Their AppLogic Cloud Computing Platform

“If we look at cloud (service) in a global sense, not just as my service or your service, or my country or your country, then IPv6 is part of the future and the solution.” Bert Armijo understands that building an IT infrastructure in a company is difficult enough, without the additional burden of planning for migrations, restacking applications, renumbering applications, and deploying those applications is tough.
